Course Description

This interactive course provides an overview of the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), as well as additional incident management concepts for healthcare organizations.

The course is delivered through three 20-minute modules: the first two review the basics of HICS and Incident Action Planning, and the third presents a simulated scenario that exposes healthcare leaders to the dynamics and pressures of incident response involving an influx of casualties and possible damage to facility infrastructure. The content provides foundational information compliant with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and is based on principles involved with The Joint Commission Emergency Management standards.

This course is intended for patients new to incident management concepts, as well as those looking to deepen their understanding of their application.

Define the Hospital Incident Command System and explain its purpose
List the basic functions of the Hospital Incident Command System
Describe the process for staffing an Incident Management Team
Apply the Hospital Incident Command System to a simulated scenario
Identify elements of proper incident notification
Identify considerations for activating an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)
Describe the purpose and use of an Incident Action Plan (IAP)
Identify considerations for demobilization and system recovery
List the categories of individuals receiving hospital communications
Describe the characteristics of an effective Hospital Command Center (HCC)
Apply Hospital Incident Command System and incident management principles in a simulated scenario

Target Audience

This course is intended primarily for Healthcare organization senior executives, administrators, plant leaders, public relations, staff leaders, and individuals with potential to be a leadership role during an incident response.

Accreditation offered:

This program was designed to meet the requirements of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, 244 CMR 5.00 for 1.2 contact hours of nursing continuing education.

Certificates:

In order to receive a Certificate of Training, you must complete the final assessment with a minimum grade of 70%
