L-101 Foundations of Emergency Management

This five-day course covers the following topics in emergency management: legal issues; intergovernmental and interagency context; influencing, organizing, social vulnerability issues; managing stress; collaboration, preparedness; team building; mitigation; response; prevention and protection; ethical decision-making; recovery; technology; administration; and the future.

Full Course Description

The L-101 is one of the five courses required to complete FEMA's Basic Academy.

The goal of the Basic Academy is to support the early careers of emergency managers through a training experience combining knowledge of all fundamental systems, concepts, and practices of cutting-edge emergency management. The Academy provides shared classrooms of adult learners and skillful instructors resulting in a solid foundation upon which to build further studies and sound decisions. The FEMA Basic Academy course work includes lectures and discussion from technical experts across various public safety disciplines, group and individual activities, and mock scenarios and presentations.

Target Audience and Accreditation

Target Audience

This course is intended for newly appointed emergency managers from State, local, tribal, territorial, and Federal emergency management agencies, and prospective professionals transferring from another discipline to emergency management.

Funding

The DelValle Institute for Emergency Preparedness is the Education & Training branch of the Office of Public Health Preparedness. In conjunction with Boston EMS, a bureau of the Boston Public Health Commission, the DelValle Institute provides high-quality all-hazards training and exercises to develop and enhance capabilities-based preparedness.
